About

Company Overview

Mesa Imaging was a Swiss developer of Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor technology and camera systems, operating at the frontier of 3D imaging and depth sensing. The company's work encompassed the full development chain: from the design of specific ToF sensor chips through the electronic, optical, and mechanical engineering of complete camera systems.

What set Mesa Imaging apart was its ability to go beyond standard products. In addition to its range of standard ToF cameras, the company developed custom camera systems for highly complex applications where off-the-shelf solutions could not meet the required specifications. This capability attracted customers in robotics, automotive, industrial automation, and other fields where precise, real-time 3D depth data is essential. With a team of 20 to 50 specialised engineers and scientists, Mesa Imaging represented the kind of deep-tech Swiss innovation that pushes the boundaries of what sensor technology can achieve.

Partnership

Our Partnership

Helvetica Capital invested in Mesa Imaging in June 2012 as a minority shareholder through Credit Suisse Entrepreneur Capital AG. The investment represented an early commitment to the deep-tech sensor category, backing a Swiss company whose proprietary Time-of-Flight technology had the potential to enable entirely new applications in 3D imaging and machine perception.

Transition

Transition

Over approximately two years, we supported the company through active board engagement as Mesa Imaging continued to develop its technology and expand its customer base. The ToF sensor market was still in its early stages, but the fundamental technology was proving its value across an increasing number of industrial and automotive applications.

When the position was exited in 2014, the company had advanced its technology platform and demonstrated the commercial viability of its approach, contributing to a broader wave of ToF adoption that would transform industries in the years that followed.
